I'd had to remove cloches, and wrap the tender plants - tomatoes, aubergines, peppers and French beans in plastic protectors - see the photo above! - I do enjoy my home grown vegetables. How I miss the Japanese sense of service. My café order of tea during the time of hydrangea and iris blooming was served in iris decorated cups with a hydrangea blossom. And I'd sit and contemplate the blossoms. It's a lovely, serene and mind soothing  occasion. Could certainly use some similar occasions as I'm rushing to finish the Japanese Edo period novella amidst government upheaval, Christmas family upheavals and local climate change problems.

It seems to me that we have become a nation of whingers. It's nothing but moan and complain and curse the government and yet demand the government should fix everything: RIGHT THIS MINUTE.

The climate change storms have swept away roads. People have been cut off and flooded out, which is devastating and frightening yet even if an emergency road and a Bailey bridge are hastily put in place there's no thanks. Just moans about a single lane track and too many traffic lights.

I am ashamed to be a member of the human race as I watch people stick their heads in the sand and refuse to accept that thanks to the pandemic, the millions who died, Trump and Putin, climate change and a general inability to accept that the world will never return to a pre-pandemic state. It's time people grew up and accepted that every one of us has to give up a lot of things in order to save the planet,
