AUGUST NEWSLETTER

An interesting collection of books on offer this month. Some with unusual historical settings. I've notice a growing interest in Chinese and Japanese ancient and mediaeval history which is a hopeful sign for my sales as I've been writing stories set in the mediaeval and Edo period for several years. This is where my Young Adult novella, 'Salt Run: The Heir's Last Hope' is set, and at last, it's about to launch. It's only three years late! I do like my heroine, Akasuki. She's such a stoic, putting up with life's disappointments with hope. Pre-orders going up next week. Planned launch in early October. I'm not sure about the cover but my editor likes it. Comments welcomed. And any of you keen historical readers care to read my version of mediaeval Japanese history? I've e-book ARCs (Advanced Reading Copy) available. I'd love some comments from readers to quote. Also I'm not good at blurbs so anyone who wants to improve it before it hits the markets is welcome to email me their version. Here's the short blurb:

Join Akasuki, bound by oath and duty to protect the heir of a powerful daimyo, on her thrilling journey of survival and sacrifice in 'Salt Run: The Heir's Last Hope', a tale of courage, loyalty, and the enduring power of determination.

I hope you find some good reads this month. As usual watch the deadlines, there are several finishing before the 31st.

You might enjoy what I've been reading.

'The Undying of Obedience Wellrest' by Nicholas Bowling

This historical knocked me backwards. Talk about a brilliant without being cheesy with that gothic twist. Good tight writing, the author made it all seem quite possible.

'The Winter List' by S. G. Maclean

part of a series set in the 1680s - England after King Charles returns. Not a bad read! Good characters, typical spy plot and I sometimes felt I should have started with the first book. Nice tight writing and no gadzookery!

Book Review

Seems about time I managed to get back to reviewing what I'm reading.

Any McAll Smith fans here? Do read his novella/story collection - my library calls it short stories but they are really connected. It's a delightful read. He is so good at 3D characters.
'The Perfect Passion Company'
The Perfect Passion Company
The Perfect Passion Company (The Perfect Passion Company, #1-3) by Alexander McCall Smith

In his gentle fashion he puts social media in its place, looks at what makes a good relationship and makes apposite comments re world politics and the state of things. Lovely man! Not a hate speech or destructive thought in sight.

This is the new cover for the new short story collection. It will be partner to 'Tales From Old Japan' and I hope it's like enough, yet different enough, to that cover. Your comments gratefully received as readers view things differently from writers. I rather like it but then I am told my taste in covers is not usually marketable.

A shorter selection of books this month, the northern hemisphere's summer relaxing time I expect so even writers are taking time off their work. The books are all historical. Most of them are free so enjoy filling your reader or mobile phone.

REVIEW

I've just finished this novel. I learnt a lot about the early automobile creation. It's well written and wryly amusing.

'The Woman at the Wheel' by Penny Haw

Carl Benz may be known as the “Father of the Automobile,” but Bertha Benz was the woman behind the wheel driving the world into a new era. I enjoy novels which allow women a little glory, especially if they deserve it. Bertha could not be an engineer, but she should have been. She not only encouraged her husband and supported him, she drove the vehicles. Inspiring historical fiction based on the real life of Bertha Benz, whose husband built the first prototype automobile, which eventually evolved into the Mercedes-Benz marque.

Another peaceful humorous read which won't send you to bed to have nightmares.

APRIL NEWSLETTER: FREE AND BARGAIN BOOKS

APRIL NEWSLETTER

FREE and BARGAIN BOOKS for you.

The Yellow eyed Penguins have just finished their moult and can go back to sea. They've been starving for most of March and early April whilst their new feathers grew in and became waterproof. Their babies this year weren't healthy great fat fluffy grey offspring and had to be fed to raise them to survival weight – not enough fish - and inoculated against a new disease which arrived with the raised sea temperature. The local sea temps are so much higher we don't need wetsuits for a swim. We sure did 17 years ago when I retuned from Japan..

But there's a Hurray for April. The YA Edo period Japanese novella is with my editor, my human editor. It's already been to an A.I. editor who can do things very quickly that a human editor would not or could not do. A.I. can be a writer's friend for all those boring analytical tasks like trawling through Amazon algorithms, or checking all the key words of the best sellers in similar books to mine which A.I does in a flash, and which really help me. But it's the human editor who turns the story into a warm, emotional readable story, and corrects my misplaced commas!

A new order of books has arrived at the library. I found the Australian historical novel 'The Star on the Grave' by Linda Margolin Roya. A fascinating read based on her family's WWII history and what happens when some family members try to hide the past. Alas traditionally published the Kindle is outrageously expensive.

I'm back reviewing for fellow Story origin authors.

I've just enjoyed:

The Prince and Dai
by Gloria Oliver

'The Prince and Dai' is a pleasant easy read, a simple story simply told. Dai and her friend Jaques make a discovery during a thunderstorm. The story makes a useful addition to the Daiyu Wu mystery series revealing more about Dai and her friend Jacques.

The baby fur seals are back and living on the safe rocks whilst their mums go fishing. The water in the cove is too shallow to let sharks, orca, or dolphins get close. Even leopard seals have a problem hunting the babies here. There's a safe enclosed pool behind their rocks where they can cool off. It's been a sizzling summer so I've been in the sea too or under a shady tree with a book. Thank goodness there are some good books available.Check them out.

G.J. Berger, best selling and prize winning historical fiction author, and my colleague in Writer's Choice (that's our writers' historical fiction publishing co-operative) is skiting away about the success of his mother's memoir, 'To Steal a Moment's Time'. It's been hitting the best seller lists. His mother was Katharina Berger, a most sought-after stage and film actress in Germany at the outbreak of WWII. I can genuinely recommend it as a fascinating read.

'To Steal a Moment's Time'

Another book I've just enjoyed is an Australian historical novel set during the 1930s and 1940s.

Called 'Limberlost' by Robbie Arnott it's a gentle, thoughtful read. Alas it is expensive but cheapest at Kobo.com
