OAMARU'S VICTORIAN HERITAGE WEEK
When the pioneer settlers arrived on the eastern coast of the southern end of South Island they discovered some marvellous stone building materials, in particular a white stone, a beautiful dazzling limestone and oh boy, these settlers were determined to use it and make magnificent buildings. After all they may be at the bottom of the world, far from home and civilisation, but they would create a magnificent city of classical beauty to equal anywhere in Europe. Although a lot of these stone buildings were destroyed during the 1960s fashion of modernising the city, a tough team of heritage preservation people fought to save them and alert the community to our architectural heritage. And what a heritage. We have bank buildings like Greek temples, great columns and pillars abound, we have an Opera house straight out of Vienna, gracious people's homes in grand palace style, Even wool stores and rows of shops were classical in style and beautifully carved around windows and doors. It's quite funny watching people stepping off a tour bus at the top of Thames street and gawping at the beautiful buildings the full length of the street. In November we have a heritage week celebration and enjoy our Victorian heritage. Most people dress up and take part in a week's Victorian activities. The afternoon teas are very good and very popular as are the dances in the evening. The two lovely ladies in the photograph chose a crinoline style and they made their costumes. A lot of people do and are strict about period details. Others just hire their costumes. Behind them you can see a bit of the Opera house's whitestone stone blocks. I'll be out with my camera again this month to find some more Victorian people to photograph for use in my Victorian ebooks.
An interesting collection of ebooks this month and lots are free. Watch the Deadlines and I apologise for those wretched bookfunnel offers which close early
